Heritage Park Designation of PGFHP

Heritage Park Designation of PGFHP

Keep Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park (PGFHP) as a Heritage Park, as defined in the 2018 PROS Plan (p. 12), rather than designating it as a regional park per the current draft 2025 PROS Plan. The primary function of this park should be to conserve and protect the natural habitat.

Supporting Information

    • Adhere to the 2018 PROS Plan definition of a Heritage Park (p. 13). “The physical characteristics of these lands lend themselves to varied passive and conservation uses.”
    • Any changes must reflect community input (with a diverse working group including members of the tribes; people with a broad range of knowledge about park classification systems; visitors; stewards; and staff of Kitsap County parks department; designers of other public and private parks and gardens in the County).
    • Balance different usages by providing walking trails for pedestrians and equestrians that are free of bike and vehicle traffic.

Why this is important to Kitsap County

The PGFHP is an important resource for providing some of the best opportunities for natural recreation to both residents and visitors, especially as Kitsap County becomes more populated and natural areas are lost.
