Park Safety and Multi-use Trails

Encourage safe use of trails by establishing and enforcing park safety rules with signage, education, and possibly fines. Reduce opportunities for accidents on park trails.

Supporting Information 

  • Post signs indicating Kitsap County legal speeds for bikes and vehicles, not to exceed 10 mph when riding vehicles or animals, per County Code: 10.12.100
  • It is unlawful to ride or drive any motor vehicle, bicycle, tricycle or other self-propelled vehicle or any horse or other animal through any park except along and upon park roads and such trails as are marked for bicycles, horses or motorcycles; or at speeds in excess of ten miles per hour; or to park any vehicle except in areas designated by the park director.
  • Post signage that dogs need to be on leashes at all times.
  • Post signs designating vehicles and bikes to yield right of way to pedestrians and horses.
  • Provide walking trails for pedestrians and equestrians free of bike and vehicle traffic.
  • Establish a relationship with the local fire department/CENCOM to set up records/data for accidents in Kitsap County Parks. Tracking this information will aid in trail safety improvement. Establish a public safety records archive for Kitsap County Parks.

Why is this important to Kitsap County

Providing and enforcing Kitsap County Parks’ safety guidelines and incorporating safety measures for trails will improve the quality of visits while reducing conflicts and accidents. Adequate resources need to be allocated by the Parks’ department to ensure park safety.
