Ecosystem Services and Forest Conservation

Jessica Randall, MS, LAc

Jessica Randall has lived in the Pacific Northwest for over 30 years, and now lives on 17
acres of forestland. She is both a sculptor and has studied Western and Easter Medicine,
holding a Master’s of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. When she moved out
to rural Jefferson County, she became aware of the forest practices that were happening all
around her, such as clearcutting and the massive use of chemical herbicides. These
practices were not only unhealthy for her patients, but also for the ecosystem. Feeling the
responsibility of having also contributed to Climate Change, she felt she should do
something to mitigate some of this damage. Thus began her work as a conservationist. She
applies her skills in diagnosis to understand the problems our forests now face, and where
treatment may be most effective. She works with various groups, including the Pacific
Northwest Forest Climate Alliance and the Center for Economic Sustainability, and she
chairs a local task force group called the Emergency Conservation Committee – Pacific
Northwest (ecc-pnw.org).
